Time maths in six trades

Every one of these breaks a normal calculator in a different way.

Everyday Life

When the film ends, how old you are in days, how long until a date. 20:15 + 2h18m.

HR & Payroll

Shifts across midnight, unpaid breaks, decimal hours for payroll. 22:00 to 06:30 - 30m.

Film & Video

SMPTE timecode as a real value, frames and all. 01:23:45:12f24 + 250f.

Developers

Epoch seconds, sprint dates, milliseconds. 1755000000 + 14d, out as ISO 8601.

Accounting

Billable time into man-days and FTE without a spreadsheet. 37h 15m / 8h.

Logistics

Driving blocks, mandatory breaks, what is left of the day. 9h - 4h30m - 45m.

What it does differently

Six things a decimal calculator cannot do at all.

Smart

It knows a date from a duration

A duration added to a clock time gives a time of day. Two dates subtracted give a span. Adding two dates is refused, because it means nothing.

14:00 + 2h → 16:00
Format

One answer, 15 ways to read it

Compact time, decimal hours, work days, timecode, ISO 8601, epoch. Switch without retyping.

1h 30m → 90m → 5400s → 01:30:00:00f24
Shortcut

Buttons for what you type daily

Whatever you keep typing becomes one key. Set the label and the value.

WD = 8h · Sprint = 14D · Lunch = 30m
Convert

A week is 40 hours, not 168

Working time does not run on calendar time. Define the steps once and every result respects them.

1W → 5d → 40h (not 168h)
